Historical Clipper Inn |
||
One of Plymouth's oldest public houses, the Clipper Inn features a wall mural by Plymouth-born artist Vincent Bennett (1910-1993) called ‘Friday Night in Union Street 1948'. One of only two or three murals he painted in the mid to late forties in Plymouth (another was in a Union Street café), it is almost certainly the only survivor. Papered over after a 1970's refurbishment of the pub (formerly the Sydenham Arms and rechristened the Clipper Inn), the mural was all but forgotten and only rediscovered by landlord Tom Macpherson in 2006. The mural was restored by artist Nick Urwin thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Plymouth Barbican Association. This significant piece of Plymouth's social history captures life in Union Street during an era when ‘The Strip', as it was known, was famous the world over as a serviceman's playground. |
